Braai4Heritage is an initiative that calls all South Africans to actively celebrate their common heritage by braaing on Heritage Day, 24 September. After all, braaing is a deep-rooted tradition in South Africa that cuts across all demographic groups.

This initiative has the potential to become a contemporary means of celebrating South African-ness, especially considering that braaing is a positive feature in most South Africans’ lives – being the fun-loving, social and hospitable nation that we are. Cooking food on an open fire is an international phenomenon, but to braai is a truly unique South African past time that penetrates racial, cultural, religious and social boundaries. The National Heritage Council (NHC) supports this call and acknowledges that there’s currently a need for a cross-cutting approach to heritage, which helps to build and highlight social cohesion. The NHC encourages initiatives of this nature to be supported by corporates as a contribution to preserving memories of a great nation from today’s generation to the future. Celebrating our heritage is important to preserve our national identity particularly among our youth. Countries with strong social cohesion become strong nations. This is why we believe it’s important to celebrate our common national heritage…

Die Heuwels Fantasties a Afrikaans band from the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, Bellville Rock City has collaborated with Soweto Gospel Choir, HHP and JR to bring us a nice song called “Our Heritage” to celebrate the day.

Remember to light up a fire and have a nice South African braai on the 24th September.
