Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 to Take on iPod Touch

Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 South AfricaSamsung has spotted a gap in the market most other manufactures have missed and it is one the iPod Touch has been dominating, but for how long the question remains.

Most smartphone manufacturers have been rushing to bring out their own tablets, but one manufacturer has gone the extra mile and added a smaller touch screen device to their line up of products for this year.

In addition to the new Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1, successor to the popular Samsung GALAXY Tab, Samsung has also announced the Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0, a iPod Touch like device running Android.

“The Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 is the perfect product for multimedia enthusiasts who pursue the new trend of smart experience.” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business. “There is a huge demand for access to applications and rich multimedia on the go. With the Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 we have created a device that delivers a Samsung GALAXY S Smartphone-like app experience and stunning entertainment features at a reasonable price.”

The Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 is essentially a GALAXY S smartphone with the telephony guts ripped out, delivering users with a full multimedia experience and access to Android Apps without the need of being tied into a cellphone contract.

The GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 comes with Android 2.2 Froyo, a large 4″ touch WVGA Super Clear LCD, a 3.2 Mega Pixel rear-facing, a front facing VGA camera, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, and a GPS receiver, all powered by a 1GHz processor.

Users of the GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 will have access to more than 230 000 applications through the Android Market, and have full turn-by-turn navigation through Google’s Navigation App and the onboard GPS receiver.

This has to be the first true iPod Touch competitor that I know of that runs Android, and must say I can’t understand why we have never seen Android devices like these before. I for one would sure not mind owing a Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0.

The Samsung GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 is expected to be available in South Africa from April this year.

FaceTime for Mac Beta Available

FaceTime for Mac Beta availableApple yesterday held an event where they introduced a array of new products focussed on the Mac, some things announced was an 11″ and 13″ Macbook Air, new Mac OS X called Lion, an app store for Mac and then FaceTime for Mac.

FaceTime was first introduced when Apple launched the iPhone 4 earlier this year, it allows you to make “Video Calls” to other iPhone 4 or iPod Touch devices, that was until now. Apple has now introduced FaceTime for Mac Beta which allows you to make video calls from your Mac not just to other Macs but to any iPhone 4 or new iPod Touch device.

Using FaceTime for Mac is really simple, all you need is an Apple ID and email address and you are ready to go. Making FaceTime calls is as simple as entering an iPhone 4 cellphone number or email address if you are dialing to a iPod Touch device, a confirmation window will pop up on the other side and when the user confirms you are ready to start chatting face to face.

As with any other beta product there could be a few bugs, but if you would like to try out FaceTime for Mac you can grab it from the Apple website.

G-Connect gives free WiFi with every new iPod Touch

Free G-Connect WiFi with the purchase of a new iPod TouchWirelessG is again making headway in the local internet market by partnering up with Core Group, the sole representatives of Apple in South Africa, and giving away free WiFi for a year to anybody that buys a brand new Apple iPod Touch device.

Since now all your iPod Touch was good for was to listen music to, or surf the odd site when you are within your home WiFi range, but with the new offer from WirelessG every new iPod Touch owner will now get a years free WiFi access to the value of R600. That right, now you can browse the web while you are on the go as long as you are withing range of the G-Connect WiFi hotspots.

The iPod Touch just became more than a music device, with new owners now being able to check emails, update their Facebook or Twitter statuses, even checking in on Gowalla or Foursquare while on the go.

Carel van der Merwe, WirelessG CEO says the R49 worth of complementary access a month translates into between 100MB and 140MB of Wi-Fi downloads per month, depending on what time of day users make use of the promotion.

“Vouchers offered with this promotion are redeemable in conjunction with our standard, super weekend and happy-hour Wi-Fi rates of 49c, 45c and 35c per MB respectively and unused data balances roll over into the following month, giving customers maximum value,” he says.

Don’t worry if you already own a iPod Touch, you too can stay connected by just purchasing a G-Connect voucher and loading it onto your iPod Touch. Great thing about these G-Connect vouchers is that they carry over, so if you do not use all your credits it will carry over to the next month.
