Facebook Introduces New Hovercard Feature

Social Networking giant Facebook is again borrowing features from micro blogging service Twitter. A few months back Twitter introduced a nice handy feature called Hovercards, which saves users a few clicks by popping op an hovercard with certain options when hovering over a user’s name.

Facebook is always aiming to bring it users the best possible experience by introducing all sorts of new features, and it is no surprise to see them copying the handy hovercard feature from Twitter and introducing it on their site.

Facebook Hovercards

Facebook added the hovercard feature to their site which you can see by hovering your mouse over the name of friends or pages you like. Hovercards is a real handy feature one would just think that Facebook will introduce more options on the hovercards.

Currently hovercards on Facebook only have an option to message a user when you hover over their name, apart from that the hovercard also display mutual friends and how many people like a page when you hover over a page name.

Hovercards is the second feature Facebook has copied from micro blogging service Twitter, previously they also copied the @username mention feature. Would be interesting to see what other features Facebook plans to copy from Twitter just to stay ahead in the game now that there are rumors of Google planning a Facebook competitor.

Twitter introduces Hovercards

Just a week after Twitter added the new local trends feature, they are at it again with a new feature. Twitter just introduced a new feature to some of its users called Hovercards.

Hovercards is a new way of seeing someones profile without actually visiting the profile. In an announcement on the official twitter blog, spokes person Jenna Sampson told how the new feature works:

On any timeline, as its namesake suggests, Hovercards are cards which appear when you hover over a username or avatar. The cards display additional information about the person and allow you to interact with them while staying within the context of your page.

These new Hovercards will come in real handy when you want to find new info on retweeted people and allow you to follow them right there and then. Hovercards also allows for faster sending of direct messages without moving away from the page.

As with the previous feature releases Hovercards isn’t currently active for everyone. Just like all the other releases Twitter Hovercards will be phased in over time to all Twitter users.
