It’s no secret that when it comes to innovation and setting standards in the local broadband market, MWEB is at the forefront. MWEB, the company that revolutionised uncapped Internet in South Africa, has now gone and done another first in South Africa by upgrading all 512k customers to 1Mbps.

This news comes after rumours have been doing the rounds that Telkom will be doing away with their 512k ADSL lines and upgrading all customers to 1Mbps, however no promises have been made by Telkom as to when the switchover will happen.

MWEB has taken the lead, and from today the 512k option will be obsolete from their product line. MWEB will be upgrading all current 512k customers to 1Mbps speeds at no extra cost and the new 1Mbps uncapped products will also be priced the same as the previous 512k products.

Users that are already on a 1Mbps data only option will get a price reduction and from now on only pay R299pm, while the new 1Mbps All Inclusive package will be priced at R599pm.

Angry Birds has to be one of the most popular mobile games at the moment with all of its releases topping the Apple iTunes App Store charts as soon as they are released.

Last week Rio the makers of Angry Birds released the latest installment of their popular mobile game, Angry Birds Rio.

Angry Birds Rio adds a whole new twist to the game, and they also upped the graphics a bit. With Angry Birds Rio, there are no more pigs, instead all the birds have been kidnapped and shipped to Rio headquarters and you have to free them. The new Angry Birds Rio takes place inside a warehouse and there are also new obstacles like hanging chains with fruit that can obstruct your shooting.

Up until now the only way Android users could get access to Angry Birds Rio was through the new Amazon App Store, but unfortunately this is only open to US users. Good news for international Android users is that Rio will be releasing Angry Birds Rio on the Android Market sometime this week. The game will be free on the Android Market and will be supported by Ads.

This morning while listening to the radio I noticed an advertisement saying you can get 12GB of free Internet.

The Free ADSL offer is a promotion by @lantic giving customers 12GB of free ADSL. The 12GB of free ADSL are split up over a period of 6 months meaning you will get 2GB per month for 6 months.

What is the catch? From what I understand the main catch is that once you reach your 2GB cap in a month you will not get capped, instead @lantic will start to bill you for every megabyte you use after your first free 2GB. All the out of bundle data will be billed at 5c per MB which works out at R51.50 per GB. The offer is also only open to new clients.

If you sign up for the Free ADSL promotion also be aware that once your six months of free usage are over @lantic will automatically continue the service and you will be billed R49 p/m. You need to give at least 30 days notice to terminate the contract.

So what are you waiting for? Go grab that free ADSL while you can, just be sure you do not over use and to cancel on your 5th month.

The highly successful iPhone, iPod and iPad game Angry Birds, which has has over 6.5 million purchases, has finally made it to the Android platform.

The aim of Angry Birds is to take control of a flock of birds who’s eggs have been stolen by a group of evil pigs. The pigs have taken refuge within structures made of wood, glass and steel and your job is to launch the birds with a slingshot to either hit the pigs directly or hit the structures around them to fall on them and destroy them.

Angry Birds has now been launched on the Android platform and for a limited time you can grab it for free via GetJar.

In a continent like Africa most of the people use their mobile phones to access the internet, but one problem most of us face is the expensive data charges that goes along with that.

Enter Facebook Zero, Facebook Zero is a new mobile site like m.facebook.com with all the same key features but more optimised for speed.

What makes Facebook Zero so special? The fact that it is free, that’s correct no data charges if you browse Facebook Zero. Initially it will only be available through 50 mobile operators in 45 countries, currently South Africa is not on that list. Good news however is that MTN will most likely be the first to offer it in South Africa due to them already offering it in other countries like Rwanda, Uganda and Sudan.

Two of the fastest growing areas of technology include Mobile and Social Networking, and Facebook with its already large mobile subscriber base is filling this gap even further by speeding up its service and offering it for free to its customers.

Collaborating with operators from around the world, Facebook developed the new Facebook Zero mobile site with two main attributes:

• It’s fast: 0.facebook.com includes all the key features of Facebook’s standard mobile site m.facebook.com. Users can update their status, view their News Feed, like or comment on posts, send and reply to messages, or write on their friends’ Wall just as they do on Facebook.com. You can still view any photos on Facebook if you want but your regular data fees will apply.

• It’s free: Thanks to the help of mobile operators Facebook collaborated with, people can access 0.facebook.com without any data charges. Using 0.facebook.com is completely free. People will only pay for data charges when they view photos or when they leave 0.facebook.com to browse other mobile sites. When they click to view a photo or browse another mobile site a notification page will appear to confirm that they will be charged if they want to leave 0.facebook.com

Facebook Zero will initially only be available on the networks in the countries listed below, but there are plans to expand the service to other countries and network operators soon. Vodafone is also in the pipeline so there may also be hope for local Vodacom users.
