In less than 47 days the 19th FIFA World Cup will be taking place here in South Africa. Preparing and keeping updated on this great event can be cumbersome but great news is that Android users have an application to make things a bit easier.

The FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place between the 11th June 2010 and the 11th of July 2010, the 2010 FIFA World Cup marks the first time that the tournament will be hosted on the African continent where defending champions Italy will defend their title.

Cape Town gears up for the Fifa World Cup Final Draw

The official beginning of the 2010 soccer world cup kicks off this Friday (4 December 2009) with the Final Draw, being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Before, during and after the group draw at 7pm, festivities will be held on Long Street in Cape Town, where more than 15 000 people are expected to celebrate with music and fanfare.

Please note that Long Street and the adjoining streets would be closed to traffic and transformed into a pedestrian zone from Wale Street to the Long Street baths for the day.

Local artists including Freshlyground, Jimmy Dludlu and TKZee are expected to entertain party-goers.

If you are free this weekend why not head on over to Long Street this Saturday and partake in the World Cup 2010 Draw festivities.

Cape Town: New departure terminal opens

Yesterday saw the opening of the brand new departure terminal at the Cape Town International Airport.

The R1.6-billion departure terminal has been designed with some impressive features to ease the flow of people, baggage and vehicles.

As the 2010 FIFA World Cup draws closer and the upgrade to the airport surges ahead, the airport authorities have handled the demands of keeping air traffic, passengers and cargo moving while revamping the buildings and introducing new, world-class systems. For the last few months the new systems and processes have been put through their paces by airport staff, airlines, retailers and other businesses that operate at the airport in preparation for opening day.

To help ease with the transition from old to new the Cape Town International Airport has produced booklets which will be handed out to people for them to help find their way around the new terminal. The new terminal is a departure terminal for domestic and international flights. It boasts a 200m long departure hall, 120 check in counters and 20 self service kiosks. It also has a new drop of zone, centralised security checkpoint, five new air-bridges, a viewing deck and 30 shops and restaurants.

Comming in the next few months will be the R394-million parkade with 4000 parking bays, extra aircraft bays, more air-bridges, a bigger car hire area, a public transport plaza and an upgrade of the road system in the airport grounds.
