Top iPad Apps of 2010

With out a doubt one can easily say that 2010 was the year of the mobile App, with just about everybody jumping on board and releasing their own iOS, Android and Blackberry Apps, but what changed the way we consume mobile media even more was the release of the Apple iPad. Suddenly app makers had so much more screen real-estate, power and features to work with.

Every year Apple releases its annual iTunes Rewind feature where it names all the apps that are worth owning, and good for them cause with more than 300 000 apps in the Apple iTunes App Store, choosing the right one can sometimes be a bit difficult.

Its no surprise that Flipboard has taken the number one spot as the Apple iPad App of the year, this is definitely my favorite App for the iPad too.

Now if I were to choose the iPad game of the year I would give it hands down to Angry Birds, Angry Birds is in almost all of the iOS top 10 App categories for this year and rightfully so. The addictive game where you catapult birds has been a huge success with just about every iOS user this year, and its fame does not stop at the iOS platform. Unfortunately iPad game of the year went to Osmos for iPad.

No Coke Fest for 2010

One of the biggest music festivals every year with great international and local lineups will not happen this year. The Coke Zero Fest is probably the most anticipated rock music event every year, but fans will have to anticipate extra longer this year.

Although there has not been an officially released statement by Coca-Cola South Africa, Dionne Domyan from Penny Stein Promotions confirmed that the Coca Zero Fest will not happen this year.

“The sad news is that there is no Coke Zero Fest this year as Coca-Cola are one of the major sponsors of the Fifa World Cup so all their energy (and resources) have been channeled to this event,” Domyan told Entertainment Africa.

“We are however hoping for an official statement from Coca-Cola in the next few days regarding this,” Domyan continued.

Facebook has been flooded by the news on various groups by fans expressing their disappointment, while some groups have already started suggesting what bands they want to see in the 2011 line up. The list include Paramore, Linkin Park and Red Hot Chili Peppers, right through to Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Slipknot.

Some good news though is that if you were looking forward to one hell of a rock show you can always go rock away at Ramfest IV. Ramfest will be taking place February 26 – 27 at Worcester and for the first time in Gauteng on the 6th of March.

Some of the local bands you will be able to see at Ramfest include Fokofpolisiekar, The Narrow, The Dirty Skirts, Jack Parow, Die Heuwles Fantasties and Taxi Violence just to name a few. This years international act is Pendulum from Australia & UK

Cape Town to host 2010 World Cup draw

Cape Town was yesterday officially apointed as the venue where the 2010 Soccer World Cup final draw – at which all the qualifying soccer teams will be allotted into groups – will take place.

The week-long event will culminate in a draw on December 4 at which the 32 participating teams will be divided into eight groups and is the last milestone before the tournament kicks off next year.

The draw is expected to attract more than 2000 guests, including all the qualifying teams’ coaches and captains, and will be held at the city’s Green Point Stadium, which is still under construction. Cape Town mayor Dan Plato said construction was on track and the stadium would be completed in time for the draw.

To date, 800000 of the 3,2-million World Cup tickets have been sold, with 240000 snapped up by South Africans, 57000 sold in the US and 27000 in Australia. Not many tickets have been sold in the rest of Africa, although Ghana is an exception.

Another concern among Cape Town residents was whether the R4,5bn Green Point Stadium would be viable after the World Cup, especially after the Western Province Rugby Union indicated that it was not interested in trading Newlands for the new stadium.
