Information was recently leaked about a mobile broadband promotion that Vodacom was set to run from 1 May 2011 to 31 July 2011, soon after the leak Vodacom put details up on their site and got everybody all excited.
The Red is mofaya broadband deal from Vodacom initially offered customers 2GB of bandwidth every month, with an additional 2GB of night owl bandwidth which can be used between 12 AM and 5 AM in the mornings and also included a 7.2 Mbps USB dongle at R149pm on a 12 month contract. The next day however, the terms and condition suddenly changed on the Vodacom website and made the deal part of a 24 month contract instead.
When users saw the new terms and condition they did not take lightly to it and started to vent their anger, and soon after that Vodacom pulled the deal from their website.
The reason Vodacom said they retracted the deal from their site was to rectify the issues with the terms and conditions and have since re uploaded the deal again with all new terms and conditions offering the Red is mofaya broadband deal like it was advertised in the newspapers.
The Vodacom Red is mofaya broadband promotion will be available from 1 May 2011 to 31 July 2011 on a 12 month contract offering customers 2GB of bandwidth per month, with an additional 2GB night owl bandwidth and a USB dongle for the stated price of R149 per month.

How can I pay upfront for 12 months like Cell C Woosh deal? Vodacom is ignoring people like me who don’t like contract options.
Hey there -I think Vodacom do an internet starter pack you can pay in advance for 100mb a month for 12 months – try Internet Starter Pack – http://www.vodacom.co.za/vodacom/services/Broadband/Promotion+and+Deals/Internet+Starter+Pack?selected=7_a_Pro_3_Int_1216&ciFormat=default&ht=t
100MB is a joke, its not enough to even update your anti-virus every month! We need networks like 8ta who give us 10gigs for R199, so watch this space!
unfortunately those guys (cell-c included!) seems to thing only gauteng is populated densely enough for coverage. Cell-c has promised to cover Potchefstroom in Feb 2011, then it became march, then april etc… Still no coverage for their hspa+ frequencies. 8ta is the same. Although they use mtn as a roaming partner, the data deal is exclusive to their OWN network. Roaming clients can go f themselves. I sure would like to get the 8ta deal should they ever decide (response from their cc dept says early 2013 8-|) to include suburbia in their coverage.
Ramon: you can’t, because Vodacom wants to lock you into a contract, so you can’t complain when you ‘accidentally’ used 2400 GB in a month and you end up paying your regular R149 plus the R422 as each MB over the 2 Gigs cost you R1,2… Plus they want you to forget cancelling the 12 month contrat and automatically switch to the R349 contract thereafter…
“This promotion is not available to prepaid and Top Up customers. The current monthly price for the Broadband Standard MyGig 2 tariff plan is R 349 per month (incl VAT), but in terms of this promotion, the monthly charge has been reduced to R 149 per month (incl VAT) on a 12-month data contract. After the initial 12 months, the terms and conditions of the Agreement will apply.”
It shows that Vodacom does – other than CellC – not have their customers but only revenue in their interest…
I hope that CellC continues to innovate and drive prices down!
Have you seen cell-c’s coverage? Pathetic compared to vodacom. If cell-c decides to actually cover my town, I would switch to a pre-paid solution in a second
Cell C has a secret that the others are not into yet… they have the 99mhz modem that goes very long distances. All networks have to use the 2100mhz which signal is like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, its signal range is short, so dont expect Cell C to perform when you have a 2100 modem, rather get the 900 modem!
If only that frequency is available… The cell-c store here does not even sell those, because they have no coverage here. And what do you say about cell-c now doubling the price on their data promotion?
hi yes iam also one client that took out a 2gigx2gig contract over 12 months was never told i must put a cap onthe amount i want to use first month R2600 GO AND SEE VODACOM WHERE I BOUGHT THE DUNGLE OK WE WILL PUT A MINUEM AMOUNT NEXT MONTH ALL FINE COME THE NEXT MONTH GET MY ACC R940 GO SEE THEM AGAIN NOW THEY CANT HELP ME I MUST PHONE 082155 GET TOLDYOU MUST READ THE FINE PRINT THEN PHONE THEM WELL WHEN MY 12MONTHS IS UP I WILL BE GOING WHERE I GET A LITTLLLE RESPECT AFTER ALL I HAVE 5CONTRACTS WITH THEM AND WILL BE LOOKING AT ANEW SUPPLYER VODACOM
I need to know should i purchase this same deal of Cell C or would this one be better. Please let me know urgently.
Thanks
Hi Meggan, I would go for Vodacom as their network are way more stable than Cell C.
I purchased the Mofaya 2gb deal. What a bad mistake. Vodacom is taking people for an expensive ride. I had no warning when I reached my limit and I couldn’t check my balance as i do on my phone’s data bundle. Before I knew it they mail me saying I owe them over R2000. It is the biggest ripoff.
Their balance checking facility (https://www.vodacom.co.za/portal/site/myaccount/myaccount) was down last night, so I overran my 2GB yesterday by a few MB, so not the end of the world. They assured me upon signup that I could set the limit to anything once 3 months had passed and also advised me that there’s a 3 month cancellation period. So I’m setting reminders to start harassing them from 01 October to drop the account limit to R0.
Sad to hear that they claim you owe them R2000, as my call limit page (very user unfriendly by their design, I’m sure) seems to imply that my limit is already at R0.
Sad to see this from VodaCom. Very sad.
I also took this deal with Vodacom after one of their telemarketers led me to believe that it was an upgrade on my existing contract that I use for internet. When I got to the store it quickly became apparent that this was not the case – it was a promotion that had to be renewed once it expired on condition that the promotion was still running.
OK, I thought to myself – at least I still get 2GIGs for R149 and faster internet(with the new modem) for the time the promotion runs. Then I was told that area I live in (Durbanville, Cape Town) might not support the faster internet signal (I was not clear on this as I do receive 3G signal in my area) but by this time I was getting irritated and just wanted to leave thinking that at least I would still be getting the 2GIGs for R149 per month(with or without faster internet).
After a time of using the internet I received an sms saying that I had run up a bill R4000. I was shocked because for the four years that I have been with Vodacom, the internet service it has always been capped and no one had given me any indication that this would change when I signed up for the promotion.
The money has come off my account and I have tried writing many emails, phoning Vodacom and even going to the store where I signed the the contract to try and make them understand that although they explained everything to me, they failed to mention one of the most important details – that this promotion contract is uncapped.
Vodacom knows that they have all the power in this situation and that as the ‘little person’ there is not much that I can do about it. I feel angry and cheated by them and to make matters worse it would cost me R1846 to cancel the contract if I wanted to take my business elsewhere.
Signing up for this contract is the BIGGGGGEST mistake I have ever made .. Vodacom is a shark .. Every month I am getting billed more than is required, even though I have requested that the service be capped … they talk about disclaimers and other nonsense I have never been party to. Once June 2012, I am leaving them … they have ruined their look in my books !
What is up with some of the networks these days. Running some benchmark tests people agree that they run out of data much faster than they did a year ago without evidently using more data,.. who has found this to be their problem?
So I went in after 3 months to set my account limit to R0 (since they claimed I could set an account limit to “anything you’d like” after three months). Apparently, the minimum is R100, which is twice the vodacom.co.za settable limit of R50 and about R100 more than I want.
Apparently, VodaShops can’t do anything about it; one has to take it up with VodaCom.
Absolutely no faith in VodaCom anymore; First Mofaya, then half-hearted attempt at throwing RIM and BB under the bus (I don’t care if your BB provider has issues, my contract is with VodaCom) and segmenting of their service offering so it’s impossible to get issues resolved.
Well done, VodaCom! Glad to see limbo’s still all the rage over there. :$
