Vodacom CEO, Peter Uys, once noted that the Cell C promotional data offering, giving clients access to either 2GB or 5GB of bandwidth for a year at a very low price, was not sustainable in the long run, yet Cell C have been continuing to offer clients the special promotional data offerings.
Seems like Vodacom has had a change of heart since it re-branded and are now offering clients a similar product to that of the Cell C 2GB Speedstick offer, with prices as low as 3.6c per megabyte.
The new promotional data offering by Vodacom is a “2GB + 2GB” offering, giving clients a 7.2Mbps HSPA capable modem, 2GB of bandwidth per month, and an additional 2GB of “Night Owl” bandwidth which can be used between 12AM and 5AM, all for only R149 pm. The offering also includes free technical support and a mailbox with 5GB of storage.
Vodacom has just become the most affordable mobile broadband provider in South Africa again, and I would like to see what MTN will do about the new price reduction seeing as they still charge users R389 pm for a 2GB offering.

I think you might wanna check your CEOs, Peter Uys is CEO of Vodacom
Duane I do apologise
Though only cheaper if you take the 2G at night into consideration. Which won’t really be used by most people.
So if you look at it for what it is. 2Gig’s at R149 its more expensive than getting the CellC 2G for 12 months at R1499 or R125 per month.
Tim, if you compare it to the Cell C month to month contract pricing its exactly the same. Only difference apart from the extra 2GB that you can only use at midnight hours is the fact that vodacom does have better coverage and a more stable network.
Though with CellC you have the option of paying the amount upfront and getting it at the effectively cheaper amount.
Though yes better coverage is a plus.
Just get irritated how they mis sell the products. Sell it on the fact that it’s a better product. Don’t add the 2 Gigs of generally unusable bandwidth( Unless you suffer from insomnia) so you can then say your cheaper.
Its not R1500 at Cell C anymore. They’ve doubled their prices. Its now R3000 with modem, and R2000 for 2Gig data card, no modem. Crazy!
I’m seriously thinking about getting this.
I would schedule OS updates or podcast downloads during the Night Owl times, then I’d make the most of it.
Only thing is, Cell C offers a prepaid option (pay for a year upfront) which is quite nice, not so kean on a 2 year contract.
But in terms of network quality and stability, I would much rather go for Vodacom.
@Gerhard: No need to apologize, was just pointing it out
Duane, just want to point out that this is only a 1 year contract. Also I read through all the details and see that the out of bundle rates come in very expensive at R1.20/MB.
OK, didn’t see that. A 1 year contract is much more acceptable for me.
Ja, the out-of-bundle is rather expensive compared to Cell C’s 39c, will just have to be careful to not go over.
I suppose, I could also top-up with a bolt-on bundle if I find I’m running out.
Regarding out-of-bundle, there’s also the TopUp contract option, which basically cuts you off once you’ve used everything, this prevents accidental out-of-bundle expenses.
hi all
Good to see prices are dropping but is it me or are Vodacom only giving this out as a contract.
If thats so I can assume Vodacom is going to treat their top-up customers as second class customers and not reduce the prices on non-contract customers?
John
I just visited the Vodacom site, and the 2GB bundle is priced at R389. I also read somewhere that the Night Owl promo ended 30 March 2011.
So where exactly can I find this new deal “Vodacom Slashes 2GB HSPA prices”?
Hi Manesh, you can find it here http://www.vodacom.co.za/vodacom/services/Broadband/Promotion+and+Deals/Red+is+mofaya?selected=7_a_Pro_3_Red_1319&ciFormat=default&ht=t
Please note that this is only available from 1 May 2011
Thanks Gerhard. Much appreciated.
Manesh
Some investigation this weekend showed me that the promotion is in fact not that cheap and is actually a 24 month contract with reduced rates for the first 12 months. http://www.igeek.co.za/2011/04/18/vodacom-2gb2gb-promotion-not-that-cheap-afterall/
I read in theTerms and Conditions, that the reduced rate if for the first 12 months of a 24 month contract. However it also states that cancellation is allowed after month 13 without penalties.
Would this mean that you could still take advantage of 12 month deal, and only have to pay a normal subscription rate of R349 for 1 additional month, and cancel in month 13?
(12 * R149) + (1 * R349) and then cancel.
Yea manesh that is correct, that last month you will also not get the extra night owl bandwidth.
The thing is its upon the user to make sure to cancel the contract after 13 months, which allot of users will forget about.
Hi Gerhard. The link says parameters is either null or invalid. I was just gonna take the deal and cancel after the 13th month but it might have been cancelled or posponed.
Hi Bradley, Vodacom have taken down the deal on their website.
Oh well guess I’ll have to settle for the cell c 2GIG option.
wait a second, Since you guys are pros at this, does anyone know if telkom offers an ADSL line on any other deal other than a 24 month contract?
Thanks in advance
I see that the 2GB deal is back on the Vodacom Site. With the terms and conditions changed to reflect that the contract is for new contracts only, and the term of the contract is now 12 months.
And it also says “after the initial 12 months the terms and conditions of the agreement will apply” – what terms and conditions ? I though this was the terms and conditions ?
Manesh
I just treated myself with this contract and last month, but it seems like I have consumed the “WHOLE” 12/24 months data!! How possible is that! Don’t they allocate bundles on monthly bases?
Hi everyone,I see 8ta has just unveiled their latest promo(2Gig +1Gig) at R149 at prepaid.I think that’s a great deal.My questions are:1.Can I use their sim card on my Vodacom(Vodafone modem),or i have to buy a new one? Is it possible to reach the 21Mb download speeds, say in an urban area, using their network?Does this deal have a catch? What is it?Regards.
