Naspers owned pay TV operator MultiChoice has announced that effective 1 April 2011, many of its bouquets on DStv will see a price increase.
MultiChoice informed their customers that their monthly subscription fees will increase from 1 April 2011. “Wherever possible, the increases have been kept to a minimum,” said Fathima Ebrahim, MultiChoise spokesperson.
Three bouquets are effected by the price increase namely DStv Premium, DStv Compact and DStv Select. PVR acces, DStv Mobile, DStv North and South Indian, PVR add on, DStv Lite, DCC, ZEE TV and DStv Portuguesa rates all remains unchanged.
The new DStv prices are as follows:
| Bouquet / Add On | New Price | Old Price |
|---|---|---|
| DStv Premium | R559 | R529 |
| DStv Compact | R246 | R232 |
| DStv Select | R157 | R148 |
| PVR Access | R65 | R65 |
| DStv Mobile | R36 | R36 |
The question now remains is when is enough enough? MultiChoice are clearly making large margins of profits from its DStv offering with it having been the only Pay TV operator in South Africa for long and still having exclusive broadcast rights to certain sporting events leaving fans with no other choice then to cough up.
There is however a glimmer of hope for the non sport fans in the form of TopTV.

Every year the same moan and groan…and every year we must remind ourselves that DSTV is putting out of the very best content internationally which is where they play! Consdier worst case scenario R-$ exchange at R8…you”re paying $70 for the best content worldwide!
That is all well and good until you consider that in England I paid approx R200 a month for the premium service with PVR access and we had even more channels. So, as is always the case in SA, we pay excessive rates for an inferior service.
I feel real pissed @ Multichoice they could introduce dstv compact plus like they are doing in Africa and add more channels i don’t mind paying more as long as the product is up to scratch please multichoice give us what we want at the and of the day we are the ones who cough up money.
Yes is true we are a lot of money for nothing.you watch one movie three times a week
You idiots dstv increase the prices and all they do is repeat every show they only get new movies ones every 5 months
I HIGHLY AGREE YOU KEEP ON PLAYING ONE AND THE SAME WITHIN 2DAYS,COMEONE YOU HUMANS THAT VERY POOR.YOU HIGHLY INCREASING NOW
every day the same
Cant you let us add one premium channel to compact at a charge of say R20 or R50???? That way my baby can get cbbs please
@ DSTV : why not pay to view please ?
What is ur lates price now.
Hi Chris, the prices listed above for DStv is the current prices and should not change until April 2012 when DStv normally do price increases.
Look I jst wana find out if I cn choose the chanelsthat I want to watch I mean actualy I’m payn for the premium bt I jst watch sports chanel and news nd I’m always at work and serious if there is a possibility for me to pay for the chanel I like to watch please explain me wat steps I must follow…thank you
We better pay what we watch. I wonder which channel are they going to add?
Saturday 22 October – This morning’s news has a report that DSTV/Multichoice may be forced to give us what we want – pay for the channels we want to view. Our constant complaints may be working. Technology is available to charge viewers for their selected channels. The problem now is that selected channels must be affordable, and not be overpriced to compensate. Obviously transparency by the providers must now be monitored. We need to continue to pressure the providers, and especially in the national press to let them know we are unsatisfied.
yes please lets choose the channels we want and pay per channel dont want to pay R559 mostly for sports channels & channels i never watch!!!!!!
CAN WE PLEASE JUST PAY FOR THE CHANNELS WE WANT?THE CHARGES MUST BE TRANSPARENT AND MUST BE MONITORED BY THE AUTHORITIES!!!!!!!
Premium DSTV has now become toooo expensive and we have to keep watching reruns of the same thing over and over. I am prety sure if they let us choose our own channels there would be more subscribers because then you only pay for the channels you want to watch on a regular basis.
IM ON DSTV COMPACT, @MULTICHOICE DO YOU THINK YOUR PRICE IS FAIR OR JUST. CONSIDERING THE AMOUTS OF REPEATS IN YOUR PROGRAMMING.COME ON PEOPLE BE REASONABLE.LET US PAY FOR WHAT WE WANT TO WATCH.
I agree with all people that commented because you only how of us watch channel 208 or 401 if there is any I’ve never been so far
why cant we pay for the channels watches ,i dont want to pay R529 for sport
i would like to be installed a DSTV but i don’t understand the charges and procedure am in mathioya murang’a County.
i would like to add 2 more channel to my dstv how do i go about it
Yeah, we really need a better service, these repeats and the subscription fee is too much. In the USA the price is approximately R200 for the same number of channels as the premium package has. Obviously we are not happy, and are not complaining just because we want to be internet celebrities. Something is wrong, very.
Can you please improve the standard and more movies, I can’t afford to pay a bill for one movie pls
you guys need to give us a choice
stop the repeats frequency
remember low cost will increase the subscrition give both parties advantage
I am really frustated over the monopoly of dstv. they are charging this ridiculous price as there is no one in their competetion of the premium bouguet provider. in INDIA you will probably pay R100 for more channels what DSTV is providing at the price of R559 or so. authorities should watch over their service deliveries also.
I was surprised to see that my monthly subscription went up – no intention of an increase was published as far as I am concerned. Or is this now and automatic yearly occurance.
We are paying for repeat after repeat. Low cost american “reality”shows of little interest. Even the BBC channels are offering less and less. We now have BBC knowledge regurgitated on Entertainment.
Iam seriously thinking of giving up TV
What’s happening!!! Aren’t we the Customers/End users?? Quality is determined by the Customer. Why then must we accept any less for much more!!! Multichoice hasn’t any competiton, the trend in SA is somewhat evident..considering Eskom and rates. Its time for our Goverment to react!! We are being charged too much!! For too little!!!
i am tv fanatic but im upset to be paying 529 for tv channels that repeat the same programs my son literally sings and actsa out most moves i think im to switch to the 200 something dstv since youre not urged on solving your problem and yet you give americans better service..
Every day the same thing over and over I don’t see why I need a pvr.
Iwant 2reconnect again wats achannel
The only way to stop this, is 2 stop paying coz its non negotiable.
