A few weeks back the City of Cape announced their new online vehicle registration website which enable motor vehicle owners to renew their registrations online without the need of going to their local traffic department and filling out forms. Initially when I heard about the new online system my thoughts was another failed online system by the government.
So last week the need arised for me to renew my vehicle licence, not having received my registration reminder form in the post, my expectations was not much, but because I was pushed for time I had to choice but to test out the new online system.
Registration was simple, all I had to do was head over to the City of Cape Town motor vehicle registration and licensing website and fill out a simple online form asking for my ID number, email and vehicle registration number. Upon submitting my details I got a confirmation email saying that I will receive an invoice withing 24 hours, 15 minutes later I got the email that stated after I pay and fax proof of payment the new licence disc will be posted to me withing 5 working days. I EFT’d the amount over to the City Of Cape Town bank account and faxed proof of payment to the supplied number.
Friday evening upon checking my post box for post, low and behold there was my new vehicle licence disc, this all happened in a matter of 5 days from filling out the online form. I must admit I am really impressed with the new online process, now only if government can enable us to do more thing online.
One thing I think they can improve on with the new Online Vehicle Registration renewal is by also providing a licence disc sticker.

I think you need to realise that the City of Cape Town is local government. We are somewhat separate (fortunately
from provincial and national government.
Also, the City of Cape Town have continuously been voted the best run local government in SA. Yes, we do have our fair share of problems, but so does any other large organisation with 24,000+ people. You never hear of fraud, corruption or fruitless spending at ABSA, Nedbank, Pick n Pay, etc. eventhough we all know that does happen (if u speak to their auditors). Unlike those companies, the City of Cape Town is very transparent in its procedures, and very forward thinking.
Remember, next time you think of government, you should differentiate between the different spheres of government.
Hi there
Could you please advise how you found their bank account payment details. I have been on their website aa completed the form and received my email with my unique number, but no bank account details. I find this the most frustrating site ever whi ch is a great pity as it is SO inconvenient to have to drive some 10 kms to pay at the local municipal office.
Hi Sue, I just searched for the city of cape town benificiary.
Hi there, I have been trying to pay my vehicle license all day, I phoned in to get the banking details and Ref No. , but when I try to load them as a beneficiary with the online banking it does not accept it, comes back error, enter the correct bank account number!!!! This is after they are the only ones that show up on the ABSA site with the number I was given !!! Can anybody help this is just soooo frustrating.
Beth search for the preloaded city of cape town benificiary and add that, does nit work if you add it manually.
Thanks Gerhard, I did the preloaded thing, it came up but as soon as I said pay I got that message. I also tried to add it as a once off payment manually and also tried adding it as a beneficiary, as soon as I got the the payment stage I got the same response.I was given account number 4056584569 which comes up on the preloaded stage but still no joy!!! Talk about frustrating!!!
You funny letter verifyer is not working
The telephonic licensing thing has worked perfectly on 5 different occasions.

I dial 0860 103 089, provide my vehicle registration detail to the very pleasant and efficient operator.
They confirm the total amt payable and provides a unique reference number for the particular transaction.
I do the payment via internet banking using the public recipient (City of Cape Town) and unique ref as provided.
Normally receive the licenses within 3 working days.
I am a consultant and get paid by the hour, so the normal queue process would cost me far more than just the cost of the license.
Well done to City of Cape Town (Local Gov) for taking the initiative.
MY CAR BURNT OUT ON FRIDAY,CAN I SCRAP IT ON LINE?
I also phoned the 0860 103 089 phone number on the 27th July 2011 and was given the reference number 191739023 i went this route as i wa tld that it really works and works well. So i tried it, up until today 29 August 2011 i am still waiting on my license disk. I paid the city of Cape Town the renewal fee of R300+ and i am driving around with a vehicle that has an expired disk. i phoned the City on the 25th August to find out what was happening the lady i must say was polite but could not say what happened to my payment. she told e to email contact.us@capetown.gov.za with proof of payment which i did and recieved notification the my email was delivered and a notification the my email was read and not read meaning that they deleted my email. I tried phoneing the 0860 number on the monday morning 29 august and the phone is just ringing….Totally frustrated cause if i get a fine for an unlicensed vehicle it was not due to me but due to the City of Cape Town. and im sure they would not wnat to here anything else but that i need to pay the fine.
This system is seriously flawed. I also payed my license 4 week ago. phoned them and they also said that the payment doesn’t reflect anything on my account.
Also said to email the proof of payment to contact.us@capetown.gov.za . did so with no response. so now i am out R500-00 and also don’t have a valid license on my vehicle.
Proudly South African
Hi Stefan
i eventually received my license disk after 5 days from speaking with a guy called Eugene email him at correspondence.crm@capetown.gov.za
and make attention to him. when i called the call centre i did not want to call back or leave a msg i wanted to speak to a senior immediatley to get this sorted. so i suggest you do the same thing dont allow them to say they gonna call you back cause they never do. get reference numbers of your call names and surnames of the people you speak to etc. hope this helps
Thanks Appreciate your feedback.
I will give him a shout and see if they can sort out my problem.
Googled “vehicle license renewal online” and struggled to find the official site. Most of the other links are companies that want to do it for you.
Thanks to this blog post I managed to land on the right one! Submitted the form, lets see how it goes.
Im sorry to say that this does not work. The website just opens a blank page
