Just yesterday I updated my HTC Hero to the latest available Android OS for it, namely Android 2.1, and while installing all my social networking applications one thing that came to mind was that the official Facebook for Android App hasn’t been updated in a while.

This morning however I was greeted with a message telling mere there is an update available for Facebook for Android.

Google is currently fast gaining ground with its Android OS, it for the first time outsold Apple, and even Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has started using it. The question now is was it to test out the new app? Whatever the reasons are, the new Facebook for Android App is here and is available in the Android  market.

There is a couple of immediate noticeable addition to the Facebook for Android App, like the new photo stream that is at the bottom of the home screen of the app. The new photo stream shows all the latest photos your friends have uploaded, allowing you to side-scroll to see more and tap to view the larger version. There is also the new Notifications bar at the bottom of the home screen, which when you slide it upwards shows you a list of all your latest notifications, previous app you had to go to Facebook site to view this.

The new app also have some other nice to haves, like a sleeker interface, in-app video playback and enabling you to add friends from within the application. Another thing I noticed is that you can now actually follow links in wall posts too.

One feature that Facebook for Android still lacks is the chat functionality there is in the iPhone client, but hopefully Facebook will be enlightening us with more upgrades to the application now since Mark Zuckerberg is also running Android.
