Nokia Introduces App Wizard

Create your Ovi Application using the Nokia Ovi App WizardNokia have followed in the footsteps of Google, after they introduced App Inventor for Android.

The Nokia Ovi App Wizard enables anybody to create Nokia Ovi applications without the need of any programming language knowledge. The concept is pretty simple, although you can’t do all the fancy things like you can do with App Inventor for Android it is still useful.

Ovi App Wizard works by taking RSS feeds and transforming it into an application, users can then upload logos, change colour schemes and even add advertising if they wish. It supports multiple RSS feeds so adding your blog and twitter accounts into one application is very simple.

The Ovi App Wizard is already being used by many local developers, even media giant News24 has adopted it and created applications for News24, Channel24, Sport24, Wheels24 and Fin24.

I tested out the Ovi App Wizard this morning and must say I am really impressed with the simplicity and ease it was to create an Ovi application for iGeek, currently the application is waiting approval so keep an eye out for the iGeek Ovi application soon.

If you are interested in trying your hand at creating your own Ovi application I would recommend giving the Ovi App Wizard a try, its free and easy to set up.

Goodbye Resume, Hello Blog

I read an interesting article the other day about resumes and it got me thinking, is the resume busy dying a slow death?

A resume is normally a list of all your qualifications compiled into a document, and this is what employers look at when making their decision whether you are qualified or suitable for the job. The problem with the resume is that is can also be a document that can exclude you from the job position.

This is where the personal blog comes in. Blogging is definitely not dead, and in today’s social media boom it can in fact help you become more exposed and show off your talent. Being revolutionary is always impressive.

Start building a personal blog where you can showcase how good you are, put as much info on it as you can and update it on a regular base. This is your place to show off what you have done via a visual representation.

Personally I would recommend setting your personal blog up on a domain that represents your name, so yourname.com or yourname.co.za would work fine. You can also opt for the free method by registering a free blog with a blogging platform like Bundublog.

Remember you are building your own personal brand to show off, so try not to post irrelevant stuff on it like the latest gadget you got, you can set up another blog for that. Use this blog to promote yourself, if you want to make it more personal add a personal stream to it like your Twitter account. Just make sure your stream presence won’t harm your image you are trying to portray on your new online resume.

Add links to projects you have completed, people and technologies you have worked with, and displaying a few recommendations made by others won’t harm as well.

Start building your own personal brand now by creating your online resume blog.

Magic Trackpad: Get In Touch With Your Desktop

Apple has released the Magic Trackpad today, the first multi-touch trackpad to work with your Mac desktop computer.

Apple Magic Trackpad

The Magic Trackpad uses the exact same multi-touch technology that can be found when using your Macbook pro, and the good news is it also has a multitude of suported gestures.

The Magic Trackpad also includes two-finger scrolling, fingertip rotation, pinch zoom,three-finger swiping and four finger recognition. Tapping or double tapping on the surface initiates clicking.

Magic Trackpad works using Bluetooth technology, so you don’t have to deal with an annoying cable that dictates where you place it. Once you pair Magic Trackpad with your Bluetooth-enabled Mac, you’ll enjoy a reliable, secure connection up to 33 feet away. Magic Trackpad detects periods of inactivity, and it’s equipped with an on/off switch. Together these features help to conserve battery life, so you can keep gesturing for months at a time.

Telkom Increases ADSL Data Bundle Sizes

Telkom must surely be feeling the pressure since MWEB stunned the local ADSL market by introducing cheap uncapped Accounts, and with Afrihost offering 1GB ADSL bundles for a mere R29 per GB doesn’t make it easier for them also.

Telkom unveiled their new Do Broadband packages and prices, but its not that a big improvement. Prices stay the same with just increased bundle sizes, and their attempt at lowering top-up prices is disgusting.

Telkom Internet subscribers will from 1 August 2010 see their packages increase with a few GB and top-up prices will drop to R49 per GB, still way above the R29 per GB offering we are used to nowadays from ISPs like Afrihost.

Current Package New Cap Price
Do 1 (1GB 384K) 1GB R199.00
Do 2 (3GB 384K) 5GB R258.00
Do 3 (5GB 4Mbps) 9GB R554.00

Telkom is yet to announce pricing of their new 10Mbps service, and there are allot of questions regarding whether Telkom will automatically upgrade current 4Mbps users like they did in the past with 1Mbps users, or if the new 10Mbps service will cost extra.

Still I feel Telkom’s attempt at reducing ADSL prices is pathetic, what’s your thoughts on the price reduction?

Twitter Testing Inline Photos & Videos

It was evident that this was to happen in the future, with Twitter clients like Seesmic already offering inline media, Twitter is slowly losing those valuable pageviews to innovative Twitter clients. It seems Twitter is starting to realise this and some users have reported seeing a new setting called “Tweet Media” in their profiles.

Twitter Inline Media Settings

Tweet Media which some users had access to, seems Twitter removed it now again, gives users the option to view inline photos and videos in their Twitter streams. It came with the following description in the profile.

“By default, you’ll only see images and videos shared by people you’re following, and reveal those by people you’re not. Check this box to see media from everyone on Twitter.”

Twitter confirmed to Mashable that they are indeed testing out inline media by issuing the following statement.

“We’re constantly exploring features and settings. What you saw was a small test of a potential consumption setting for inline media. We show inline media on our own iPhone and Android apps.”

Knight And Day Review

Knight And Day Movie Review

Director: James Mangold Screenplay: Patrick O’Neill Cast: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Dano Time: 130min Age Restriction: 13LV

Genre:
Action/Comedy

Summary Review:
Knight And Day is a watchable action movie that feels like a re-run of an old favourite.

Synopsis:
June Havens (Cameron Diaz) is rushing to get on a plane to arrive in time for her sister’s wedding when she accidentally bumps into Roy Miller (Tom Cruise).

June and Roy end up being on the same flight together, but June gets scared when everyone on the plane ends up dead and they start plummeting to the earth.

As it turns out, their meeting was not as coincidental as it seemed and June is dragged into a life-threatening

Knight And Day does not have anything new to offer. The plot is vapid and flimsy, just stringing along the different scenes.

The chemistry between Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz is empty, failing to make you believe in any connection between their characters.

Although the many one-liners are sharp and the action is enjoyable – there are some excellent chase scenes – Knight And Day is nothing we haven’t seen before and compared to the special effects employed by every other action movie nowadays, it is quite disappointing.

Facebook hits 500 million users

Facebook hits 500 million users and launches Facebook StoriesEarlier today Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and Co Founder of popular social networking site Facebook, announced that they have officially hit the 500 million user mark.

The 500 million users includes people from around the work that have been active on the social networking site for at least the last month.

Facebook has revolutionised the way we connect with friends and family by building an interactive social network whereby we can keep in touch.

To celebrate this great milestone, Facebook launched a new site called Facebook Stories. The idea behind Facebook Stories is to provide a platform where users of the social networking site can share their stories on how Facebook impacted their life and that of their friends.

With Facebook Stories you can share your own or read that of hundreds of others categorised by themes and locations around the world.

Currently there is only one story submitted by an South African named Susan Ettmayr, which got what she wanted through the power of Facebook.

Now that Facebook is 500 million users strong, do you think we will ever see another social network dominate like this and dethrone Facebook in our day and age?
