Most of you probably heard the rumor about the R200 South African bank note that is not being accepted anymore.
Please note that this is kind of true, the South African Reserve Bank is recalling all R200 notes due to it having a high volume of counterfeit bank notes available out there, it is just the old series R200 notes that are being recalled.

Allot of businesses are already not accepting the R200 notes, good news is that you can trade in your old R200 notes.
The South African Reserve bank has urged all South Africans to urgently exchange their R200 bank notes at their local bank before the 1st of June 2010. The R200 note will not be discontinued but rather a new version of the note will be made available that is not that easy to counterfeit as the current R200 note.
Do you still do large transactions with cash? When last did you get a R200 notes from the ATM or Bank teller?

Hey, where is the SA Reserve Bank announcement for this?
Official letterhead, news announcement…….
This smells like hoax
Lovetherand I can mail you a copy of the statement if you’d like. This is def not a hoax, the R200 notes are being recalled and replaced by a newer version. You wont loose your bank notes, you can just trade it in for newer versions of the R200 note at your bank.
UPDATE ā 21.05.2010 @ 13h10
I received a call from The Reserve Bank a few moments ago to inform me that the information being passed around is incorrect and that we must not panic about the R200 note situation. Along with our conversation, I received two press releases, which you can download below:
* Official press release. R200 counterfeit notes in circulation
* South African R200 bank note no longer accepted
It is really important that the correct information be circulated, so please take the time to download and read these press releases!
I have uploaded the press release http://www.igeek.co.za/press-releases/Official-press-release.-R200-counterfeit-notes-in-circulation.pdf
It is ONLY the OLD R200 (as pictured above) note that is being withdrawn and counterfeited.
ALL retailers have to accept the new R200 see http://www.reservebank.co.za and view the POSTERS – Poster 1 for the “new” R200 note – it is illegal to refuse it.
Consumers know your rights.
