Julius Malema online accounts…

The past couple of days news has gone viral on social networking sites and blogs about the new range of Julius Malema online accounts that was opened.

Bloggers and twitter users spread the word like a wild fire stating that ANC Youth League President Julius Malema has opened an official Julius Malema blog as well as twitter and Facebook accounts. The news was spread without people trying to verify that if this was in fact real accounts of Julius Malema himself.

On another local blogger’s site he wrote an article about Julius Malema turning to wordpress for his own personal blog, after reading the article I got very suspicious and checked out the whois information of the domain juliusmalema.co.za. The first sniff in the nose I got was with the email address that was used to register the domain with, then there were some other factors in the registration details that convinced me that this was definitely a hoax.

After searching twitter for Julius Malema I came across multiple twitter accounts claiming to be the real Julius Malema.

The ANC Youth League later today came out firing against reports of the Julius Malema twitter account, blog and Facebook account and told news24 that the accounts are fake.

“That’s a fake account and Comrade Malema doesn’t even use Twitter,” said Floyd Shivambu, spokesperson for the ANC Youth League.

Shimvambu said that Julius Malema will not be taking action against the creators of the accounts, and they won’t lodge complaints with social networking sites twitter and Facebook as they have better things to do with their time.

There you have it, looks like Julius Malema isn’t that tech savvy after all.

The beginners guide to ADSL

So you’ve heard all these funny terms on radio, TV and from friends about broadband and ADSL, what exactly is this and how do you go about getting your hands on this thing called ADSL?

Lately I have had quite a few queries from users that would like to know how to go about getting ADSL, where do they go, what do they need and who is the cheapest. If you are still using Dial-up now is the time to read further and learn how you could be saving allot of money every month.

First off let me start by explaining the advantages ADSL has over Dial-up. The fastest ADSL offering currently in South Africa is more than 70 times faster than Dial-up Internet, allowing you to get your files allot faster and more reliable. With ADSL you are not billed per minute like with Dial-up but rather on usage allowing you to browse longer and allot more websites for allot less than with Dial-up Internet.

What you need to get ADSL installed:

  • The only thing you will need to be able to get ADSL installed at your premises is a fully working telephone line from Telkom. Please note that ADSL will not work on prepaid Telkom phones.

You have your Telkom phone line installed what is next? The next step in getting ADSL is to order a ADSL line and Data Package, luckily now a days allot of ISPs (Internet Service Providers) does this for you. You will also require a ADSL modem, a tip here, allot of ISP’s will offer you a free modem if you sign a 24 month contract, I always urge people to stay away from signing contracts but there are people who doesn’t mind it just make sure the extra monthly fee is not allot more than what it would have cost you to buy the modem yourself. You can get a decent ADSL modem for around R600.

If you are new to ADSL and would like to keep is simple I would suggest your opt for the all in one packages the ISP’s offer. Lets take a looks at the different all in one ADSL packages available currently by different ISP’s. I will keep it to the cheaper low end packages that is ideal for normal home usage.

Package WebAfrica Complete 1 Telkom Do 1 SAOL All In One Cybersmart Circuit plus 1
Setup Fee Free R598.31 R395.00 Includes ADSL Modem R275.00 Includes ADSL Modem
Monthly Cost R169.00 R199.00 R189.00 R169.00
Line Speed 384kbps 384kbps 384kbps 384kbps
Traffic Allowance 1GB 1GB 1GB 1GB

As you can see some ISP’s offer a free ADSL modem included with their once of setup fee. Apart from your phone line obtaining one of the packages above will have you surfing the Internet in no time. Note that most of the packages above also includes free email addresses if needed.

To recap everything you need to be able to surf the web using ADSL is the following:

  1. Telkom Phone Line
  2. ADSL Modem (Included with some all in one packages)
  3. One of the packages mentioned above.

That’s it, see how simple it is to move over from slow and costly Dial-up Internet to fast and affordable ADSL Internet. If you have any queries please feel free to leave a comment and I will try my best to help you out.

Afrihost launches high-cap accounts

In what I believe is another attempt to take away market share from the bigger ISP’s like WebAfrica, Afrihost has now launched several high-cap ADSL accounts.

At the end of last year Afrihost started the broadband price war by introducing ADSL accounts at a mere R29 per GB, way lower than what the other ISP’s at the time was asking. Now they are targeting the power users, the guys using 50GB+ every month.

Afrihost today launched their ADSL Power Plans which allows purchases of high-cap accounts for only R9.50 per GB. This price compared to WebAfrica’s high end packages is a steal, WebAfrica charges R44.50 per GB for their high-end caps, that is even more than the normal Afrihost accounts.

Heavy users or businesses interested in obtaining one of these high-cap ADSL Power Plans from Afrihost can sign up here and get a all time low rate of only R9.50 per GB.

HTC Hero Best Mobile HandsetThe Android based HTC Hero has won the prestigious award of Best Mobile Handset. HTC just announced that its HTC Hero was awarded the prize of the best mobile handset at the 15th Annual Mobile Awards.

“A remarkable 500 entries from across the global mobile ecosystem were submitted this year, all of an extremely high caliber, and the winners should be incredibly proud of their achievements,” said Rob Conway, CEO and Member of the Board, GSMA.

Since the release of the HTC Hero late in 2009 it has only received great feedback from its consumers and industry analysts in the mobile arena. The HTC Hero features a 528MHz Qualcomm processor as well as Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, HSPA, EDGE, and GSM and a 3.2″ capacitive touch screen. The best of all, this all runs on the new and fast growing popular Google Android OS.

TweSMS Needs Your Feedback

Most of you by now know about my latest project TweSMS that allows you to receive twitter direct messages and mention to your phone by means of SMS messaging.

In an effort to move forward with the project there is some decisions I need to make and I would like to have your feedback on the matter. It was recently pointed out the TweSMS is a really great service but the question remains would you pay for a service like this? Some users has mixed feelings over this and one pointed out that it’s a case of I like it, but can live without it if I have to pay for it.

Now I would like you to give me your opinion on the matter, would you pay for the TweSMS service or would you still use it if it was free but supported by advertisement SMS messages every now and then?

Buzzoid the first Google Buzz Android App

With the release of Google Buzz a few weeks ago, there was one question in the back of my mind that kept popping up and that was who was going to develop the first Google Buzz application and for what platform?

I am glad to report that my favourite mobile OS, Google Android, is the first to claim the title of having the first Google Buzz App.

Ironically one would have thought that Google would have been the first company to release an fully fledged Google Buzz application, but I guess they had their hand full with the privacy issues on Buzz.

Buzzoid is the creation of developer Arno Den Hond, the same guys that developed the Support Haiti application. The application is still in its early alpha stages but allows Buzz users to post and comment away on they Android phones, the only downside being you can only manually add buddies at the moment.

Buzzoid currently has two versions available, a free version and a paid for version, only difference being that the paid for version has no advertisements.
