Blue Bay Lodge also known as Blouwaterbaai  is situated literally  meters from the white sandy beaches of Saldanha near the town of Langebaan.
Me and my wife was invited to a special occasion of two of our friends that got married the past weekend at Blue Bay Lodge in Saldanha. Now let me start by saying how Blue Bay Lodge describes their nice, or shall I say not so nice place to stay. “The elegantly gabled Blue Bay Lodge is built only meters above the wide, sandy beaches of Saldanha Bay; a tranquil South African fishing village lying approximately 120 kilometers North of the legendarily beautiful Cape Town. Situated in the relaxing privacy of the resort, the hotel offers guests privacy, first class accommodation, and a wide range of services and activities.
‘Privacy and tranquillity’ is our tag line. The hotel has comfortable, five star ‘en suite’ rooms, broad terraces where drinks are served to guests as they relax watching whales and porpoises glide by, before being served delicious meals in its charming a la carte restaurant, the well known ‘Blue Bay Cafe’.”
Now after visiting the Blue Bay Lodge website and reading the above I was impressed and the R800 per night price tag kind of made sense. This impressiveness soon disappeared after I booked in and walked into the suite.
Me and my wife arrived about an hour and a half before the wedding was suppose to start, enough time for us to take a nice shower and bath after the hour and a halves drive from Cape Town. As we entered the suite we walked into a small kitchen with bathroom to the right. First thing my wife noticed it that there was no bath only a shower and she already did her hair before we left Cape Town. As we walked into the room my jaw dropped to the ground when I saw that we are sleeping in a 3×3 size room with just enough space to move around the bed.
So we proceeded to get our stuff ready for the wedding, I sat down on the bed and notices that this is not a double bed, but in fact two single bed pushed together to make it look like a double bed, and the worst thing was the there wasn’t even a double bed duvet over the two single beds. Each bed had their own single bed duvet. Now I’m a real calm man, but at this point I was starting to get upset, because for a fee of almost R800 for the night I really did expect more from the three star graded Blue Bay Lodge.
It was time to get into the shower to freshen up after the drive and get ready for the wedding, getting in the shower and turning on warm tap there I stood for a good 5 minutes waiting for some warm water. Yes that correct a 3 star hotel that doesn’t have warm water, I must have overseen that part on the Blue Bay Lodge website. Now I let the warm water slip, thought maybe for some odd reason they turn of the geysers during day and it was hot so I took a cold shower. However the next morning while getting ready to go to breakfast there was still no warm water, not even a little bit of warm water.
The wedding was fabulous apart from the ceremony being held next the the pool where the staff did absolutely nothing about the people swimming and screaming while two people stood in front busy with a very moment in their life. Other than that I would say the wedding went quite well, just one or two persons entering the function area that was not meant to be there.
The morning after the wedding the wife and I headed to the restaurant after not showering due to no warm water as stated, and proceeded to go and get a cup of coffee. This was when a gentleman that worked the bar the previous night asked us for our names and checked a list. He then told us that our names are not on the list and that we would have to pay extra to have breakfast. Suddenly I just had enough of Blue Bay Lodge and their so called first class accommodation and service.
The day I made the booking I asked for bed and breakfast and after receiving the reservation details and seeing that it is almost R800 just for the night I had no doubt that it had to include breakfast, seeing that I did ask for a room for me and my wife with breakfast in the morning.
I told the guy how disappointed I am in the Blue Bay Lodge establishment and that I would like to see a manager, and he started getting really cocky with me saying that he is the manager. That’s just where I had really enough bullshit from Blue Bay Lodge and their staff and decided to proceed back to my room and packed my car and took off to Cape Town again where I could have a nice warm shower in the comfort of my own home and sleep on a bed next to my wife under the same duvet.
If you are thinking of visiting Blue Bay Lodge or would like some accommodation in the Saldanha area, I would urge you to stay as far away from these guys as possible. I have sent through an email early this morning, and phoned requesting to speak to a manager but no one is available to talk to me. Blue Bay Lodge is not worth a three star tourism grading, and for sure not worth R800 for a one night stay.
I’ll keep you guys updated as to what happened in the end, if and when someone from Blue Bay Lodge phones me.

Thanks for the warning. Will surely stay away from this one!
Wow!!! It’s amazing how people in the industry can ruin every dream!
Gerhard,
Don’t worry i learned the hard way and i am a resident just about 50 m from blue bay lodge, I live in bluewaterbay. Now my situation is almost similar. Except this was our “spit braai wedding” the day of my wedding while i was preparing the hall. We where ask if we would require table cloths for the tables and as my husband arrange the hall they said this will be included and it should be white table cloths!
Ha, i asked for white table cloths and guess what i got, the most awfullest blue checked “lappies” Okey, i got around the checked blue lappies. Now while my father was preparing the meat for the spit and we where loading out the catering as i hired the crockery and glasses my mom looked in the fridge as to see if anything is in there so we could store the wine, ice, champagne. And that was when we saw the other wedding that was being held at the lodge’s CAKE was in one of the fridges.
We took it upon ourselfs not to disturb that fridge ever again for we could take the blame if the cake was damaged!
My wedding was to be take place at 3pm right there and then we just go into a braai and do the social thing.
Mmm now my little puppy was with us as well but she doesn’t make a nuisance of her self and we would have taken her home when all was finished and when the socializing was to begin.
And then the manager i will call him G. Came in and started accusing my father no dogs allowed. and we should watch out for the cake in the other fridge and do not make a ruckus as a big wedding is also being held at the lodge. He swore at my father and luckily i intervened just to have bloody piece at my so called bring and braai wedding.
Now we took my puppy home earlier and just before the guess was to arrive people also came to swim which we asked nicely if they could leave in a few minutes which they did.(we got lucky there)
Now later after the vows was said and we started with the socializing and i was running around like a mad person keeping everyone happy what appears in the hall.. A massive full grown husky dog. Well i am a dog lover and didn’t mind it very much, but after The Manager G told us NO PETS ALLOWED i was getting kind of Pissed Off!!! And again people came to swim at the conference hall’s pool were we where having our little party!
Oh did i mention that when Mr G came to warn us of the cake and stuff he told US that WE should clean the place up just like we got it. Well said i think, because we had to clean before and bloody after!!!! The bathrooms was a mess and the kitchen floor looked like some walked in muddy boots there.
Okey okey, i am getting so angry when i think back to this. In the end i sent an email stating my problems and all they sent me was a voucher for a dinner for 8 people and on the same voucher mistakes was typed as at the bottom of the voucher it said again that 6 people could attend this dinner.
Confusing is all i could say.
I never used the voucher.
My experience was the complete opposite of the two above. My daughter got married here on Saturday, 26th February 2011. We arrived on Friday at 9 am – our rooms were ready for us. We were shown to a large room where we were told we could put all the decor for the wedding and told we could use this room to get everything ready for the next day. The staff (all of them) did everything they could to help, we had a disaster with the cake (it had got seriously damaged en-route from Cape Town) and their chef helped put the cake back together again, he even worked on it in the evening after we had all gone out for a pre-wedding celebration. All the staff went way beyond the call of duty and helped in every way they could. The Manager, Gerrit, made us feel as if this wedding was as special to him as it was to us, one of our glass centrepieces also got damaged in transit and Gerrit went off into Saldanha and Langebaan to try and find us a replacement. He returned with a glass bowl from his house, redid the centrepiece exactly as we’d done the others and put it on the table without us even knowing about it. The food was superb, the party went on until after 2am, yet when we got up for breakfast at 7am the following morning everything had been packed nicely away and the room restored to normality. We had expected to have to pack all the decorations etc., away ourselves – fantastic job Blue Bay Lodge, definitely a 10 out of 10 from us!
Hi Sue
We are thinking about getting married at Blue Bay lodge – we would hire out the entire lodge.
Would you recommend it?
Do you have any photos from your daughters wedding?
Thanks
Hi Kirsten
Don’t know if you got my original reply, but here is a link to look at some of the photos from Laura’s wedding – once again I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Blue Bay Lodge as a wedding venue, everything about it was fantastic and the staff were amazing.
